Sanjay Gupta, who is typical of action-oriented dark and intense films with gangsters like ‘Kaante’, ‘Kaabil’, ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’, ‘Shootout at Wadala’, is once again seen in his old style in ‘Mumbai Saga’. Mumbai’s underworld and its dark world have been Gupta’s favorite subjects. Here too they are seen cashing in on the same element.
Mumbai Saga is the story of Amartya Rao (John Abraham), a common man who sets up a vegetable shop, turns into a gangster. The film is set in 80s Mumbai, where Gaitonde (Amol Gupte) runs a week-long extortion business while sitting in jail through his goons. In the same connection, once when his goons try to kill Amartya Rao’s younger brother Arjun (Prateik Babbar), Amartya takes up arms to take revenge. Mumbai’s Kingmaker Bhau (Mahesh Manjrekar) puts his hand on Amartya’s head on his way to become a gangster. Amartya grows in stature as a gangster in this journey of mafia, power, politics and enmity. He also marries Kajal Aggarwal and sends his younger brother Arjun to London to keep him away from this bloody game, but the twist in the story comes when Amritya, a well-known mill owner from Mumbai, Khaitan (Sameer Soni). And from there, Amartya’s maths of keeping power in Mumbai goes awry. Khaitan’s wife (Anjana Sukhani) places a reward of ten crores on her husband for catching the murderer. Now Amartya not only has to face an enemy like Gaitonde, but also has to avoid the attack of an encounter specialist like Vijay Savarkar (Emraan Hashmi). You have to watch the movie to know who wins in this hide and seek of gangsters and police.
Director Sanjay Gupta opens the film with a heart-wrenching scene of chasing and murder and manages to keep the scenes captivated with scintillating action and emotion till the first half. Making the characters of his film larger than life with their looks, action and dialogue has been the specialty of Sanjay Gupta, which he has done well here too. But the problem comes when you have to see the story that you have seen many times before. There is a lack of novelty in Gupta’s story. Rapidly changing events in the second half complicate the story. The climax director has kept in his favorite genre. Dialogues like ‘Gandoon se nikli holi na Eid dekhti hai na holi’, Marathi ko jo rokega, Marathi ko thokega are written keeping in mind the frontbenchers. The look of the film gives a completely 80s feel. On the music front, Dev Negi’s sung ‘Danka Baja’ in Payal Dev’s music takes the story forward, but ‘Shor Machega’ in Honey Singh’s voice suddenly pops up.
John fits the character of a ruthless gangster every step of the way, with hilarious action sequences. Emraan Hashmi’s entry is late in the film, but as an encounter specialist officer, he adds color. John and Imran have proved to be a shock to Nahle. While Mahesh Manjrekar suits the role of Kingmaker Bhau, Amol Gupte stuns in the role of Gaitonde. The female cast like Kajal Aggarwal and Anjana Sukhani have not been given a chance to do much on screen. Prateik Babbar, Rohit Roy, Gulshan Grover among others have given justice to their roles. Suniel Shetty makes a guest appearance.
